• Martial Arts of the Miao People

The Miáo are an ancient Chinese people, according to their myths they claim descent from the followers of the mythological god Chīyóu. Chiyou is said to have the head of a bull, 4 eyes and 6 arms and to have been the inventor of the Jian (sword), Ji (halbred), and other traditional Chinese weapons. He is still worshiped by the Miao peoples as their ancestor, and has been worshiped since ancient times by the Han Chinese as a god of war. Even today the Miao people attribute their martial arts to the teachings of Chiyou. According to both Miao and Han myths Chiyou led his tribe in battle against the coalition of tribes under Huang Di (the Yellow Emperor) who is considered the father of the Han (Chinese) ethnic group. After losing to Huang Di at the Battle of Zhuolu (26th century BC) his tri...

After losing to Huang Di at the Battle of Zhuolu (26th century BC) his tribe was forced south. Since that time the Miao have slowly migrated south due to population pressures and the need for more resources, with some settling in each area while others moved on. Over time the Miao fragmented into different tribes each with their own local customs. Anyone living in the U.S.A. will be familiar with the Hmong who are part of the Miao language family ethnic groups. Today Miao tribes can be found from Hunan province in the north, west to Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, and south to Laos and Burma. The people in this film are called Hmyo or A-Hmyo, better known as Hua Miao* (Flower Miao) living in northern Yunnan and Western Guizhou provinces. I have left out many important details from the brief history I wrote. I would suggest you read more about the Miao and their ancient culture, as well as their huge contributions to Chinese culture. I would also suggest reading the myths surrounding Chiyou and Huang Di for anyone interested in Chinese or Miao culture. *Thanks goes to niamtxiv for providing information on which branch of the Miao people this footage is from.

"Writing with thread" Miao clothes are beautiful, but they also hold a significant value in the fact that they record the history of the group that wears it. According to the Changning Miao (above), women wear pleated white skirts to represent the snowy mountains their ancestors once called home in ancient times. White is also a symbol of purity. The stripes on the sashes represent the different locations their ancestors have migrated to due to the expanding Han Chinese. Yellow represents Yellow River, white for Yangtze River, green for Lake Dongting and Lake Poyang. The middle red stripes represent where they are currently and the lower red stripes represent their survival. The tassels at the end of the sashes represent grassy plains. Around the waist are triangle pieces. Legend is that after being defeated in battles they would take their flags and wrap it around their waist, leaving the poles behind. This was to show that they considered themselves undefeated. Eventually it was adopted as a clothing style. Their clothes also include many abstract embroideries of animals and flowers to represent their love of nature. Geometric shapes and circles are used to represent agriculture and worship of the sun. Eventually Lake Dongting and Lake Poyang would be where the Changning Miao flourished again. However due to constant invasion they were once again forced to migrate further southwest. On their journey, they made shawls, and draped them with shells to symbolize grief and nostalgia for their homeland. I have noticed this movie ever since last year, and finally the movie trailer is out! :) Chinese title: 苗山花 (Miao Mountain Flowers) Previously known as: 烽火苗山花 (Beacon Fire Miao Mountain Flowers) International title: The Flower of Revenge The movie was produced in Guizhou, China starting in 2014, but now it is finally being release in 2015. I can see this movie shows of all Hmong, Hmu, and Ghao Xong clothing. All type of Miao clothing are presented altogether for once in a film. AWESOME! XD Based on a historical true story, this movie tells the story of the Hmong/Miao groups of farmers protecting their area from the invading Kuomingtang (Chinese Nationalist Party) oppression that took place in the late 1930's in Luodian, Wangmo, and Ziyun, the three border areas of Mashan County, Guizhou. The revolt was lead by the Hmong/Miao "Three Xiong Siblings" (one oldest sister, and two younger brothers) after years of struggles with the Kuomingtang oppression of no equality and freedom. The Hmong/Miao was able to round up helps from other some ethnic groups such as the Buyi, and the Han Chinese and received help aid from the Chinese Communist party. "The Flower of Revenge" tells a story of war, hardship, struggles, lost, but also a celebration of humanity.

A Miao and Dong movie made in 2014. There is no English subtitles for this movie. Watch for your own interests! Thank you! I was debating whether to upload this movie, or not, but I guess I'll just upload the film anyways for those who likes to watch the movie regardless if there is subtitles, or not. I will not be making subtitles.

They marched out of the camp trying to bring attention to their claims for asylum. Some say they were offered $500 per family from the Los government to return home. That's the equivalent of half a year's wage in the impoverished nation.
